Description

Temporary ammunition dumps of World War II date are visible on historic aerial photographs as buildings and were mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located along the road between Padbury and Thornborough, Padbury, and centred at SP 72438 31664. The hutments were temporary and usually made of corrugated metal, covered and camouflaged; they are not present on the 1948 photographs. The line of hutments on the west side of the road, parallel to the road, measure 8m, 10m and 5m in length respectively from the south and are 4m wide. On the south side of the road the hutments are short side towards the road behind the hedge line with access points cut through the hedge; they are all approximately 5x4m in size. There are 13 groups of hutments along the roads between Thornborough and Padbury and Adstock with a possible military camp near Coombs Farm, Padbury, which may have been to support these ammunition dumps (see MBC45223). This is conjectural and the buildings may have been associated with the brickworks to the north of Coombs Farm. (1-4)
