Description

An extractive pit of post medieval/modern date is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as extant earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located on the west side of Dunstall Lodge, Padbury, and centred at SP 71942 31087. Subrectangular pit is visible on 1940s aerial photographs and is still present on lidar visualisation; modern land use is pasture and earthworks can still be seen on Google Earth, clearest in 2003. The pit is cut in to the edge of ridge and furrow earthworks and the underlying solid geology is Peterborough Mudstone overlain by superficial deposits of Till Diamicton, and it measures approximately 40x25m. A 1591 map of Padbury shows this area as Dunstall Hill and Dunstall Pitt, in a wide area between ridge and furrow furlongs, one called Dunstall Furlong. The ridge and furrow earthworks remain in this area under pasture and are well preserved, along with this pit. (1-5)
