Description
A large subrectangular depression of uncertain date and function is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located across three field boundaries about 400 metres SE of Coleman’s Farm and centred at SP 66205 29568, the subrectangular depression is about 105 metres SW-NE and up to 78 metres SE-NW at its widest points. It has two linear sides, the NW facing about 85 metres long and aligned WSW-ENE and the SE facing about 78 metres aligned SW-NE. The SW and NE ends of the depressions are slightly rounded. Fragmentary earthwork banks are visible on the NW and SW facing sides. This may have functioned as a pond, possibly in the medieval period, as it is situated at the bottom of a shallow valley, through which a modern drainage ditch currently runs. The earthwork does not feature on historic OS map editions or the 1813 Ordnance Surveyor’s Drawing (1-7).
