Description

A system of boundary ditches and banks of a medieval deserted settlement is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located in fields north of Cowley Farm and centred at SP 66328 28269, the earthwork complex extends about 320 metres SW-NE and 195 metres NW-SE. The earthworks are surrounded and abutted by blocks of medieval ridge and furrow cultivation. It comprises a series of interconnected linear and curvilinear ditches, some that bound the edge of ridge and furrow blocks, with others forming contiguous subrectangular ditched enclosures of various sizes. These appear to be integrated into a larger earthwork ditch complex to the SW that defines the medieval deserted settlement, including a moated site (Bucks HER Nos MBC790, MBC786 & MBC787. Part of these earthworks also include a circular pit and a linear bank, as well as a post-medieval trackway recorded on the 1880 dated 1st Edition OS map that bisects some of the earlier ditches (1-4).
