Description

A probable post medieval tree ring enclosure and tree mound, woodland boundary ditches and a trackway are visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and were mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located across fields E of Mount Pleasant Farm and centred at SP 472538 226517, two sinuous parallel boundary ditches up to 2.5 metres wide and aligned NW-SE describe the N and S sides of the former extent of a woodland called General Wood. Recorded on the 1880 dated 1st Edition OS map and still extant on the 1923 dated 3rd Edition, the wood has been completely cleared on aerial photographs taken in 1946. Adjacent to this is an oval tree enclosure ring ditch up to 4 metres wide that enclose an oval tree mound about 31 metres in diameter at is widest. A cluster of trees is recorded at this location on the 1st Edition OS map. To the N of the woodland boundary ditch is a 2 metres wide and 120 metres length of ditch that matches a trackway on the 1st Edition map that was the main access leading from Mount Pleasant to the Sandhill to Middle Claydon at that time. On aerial photographs taken in 2019 and recent remote sensing data, the earthworks remain visible (1-5).
