Description

A probable post-medieval mound is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located in a field about 140 SE of St Michael’s Church in Steeple Claydon village and centred at SP 70587 26621, a circular mound is about 9.5 metres in diameter and appears to sit atop a block of medieval ridge and furrow cultivation earthworks. Nothing is recorded on historic editions of the OS map, but the mound earthwork is visible on aerial photographs taken in 1946 and still extant on recent remote sensing data. The function of this mound is unclear but may possibly be a windmill mound (1-3).
