- EXTRACTIVE PIT (Post-Medieval - 1540 AD to 1798 AD)
Description
A post-medieval extractive pit is visible on remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located within a woodland copse about 210 metres W of West Hill Farm and centred at SP 70593 29409, a rectilinear shaped extractive pit about 87.5 x 61.5 metres is about 5,202 square metres in area and appears to cut into a block of medieval ridge and furrow cultivation earthworks. The extraction is not recorded on the 1880 dated 1st Edition OS map or subsequent editions, but the woodland does. The woodland covers all the earthwork features on aerial photographs taken since 1946 available to the project (1-4).
