Description

A 20th century extractive pit is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located in a field immediately adjacent Claydon Hill Farm and centred at SP 71837 27861, an irregularly shaped extractive pit is about 3,393 square metres in area and appears to cut into a block of medieval ridge and furrow cultivation earthworks. The extraction does not feature on the 1880 or 1899 dated historic OS map editions, but does appear on the 3rd Edition OS map dated 1923. On recent remote sensing data and aerial photographs taken in 2019, the extractive pit is no longer visible, now being gardens and paddocks through post-war farm expansion (1-4).
