Description

An alignment of three post-medieval extractive pits are visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and were mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located in a field about 520 metres NW of Claydon Hill Farm and centred at SP 71641 28372, three very shallow, plough-levelled, irregularly shaped extractive pits are aligned roughly W-E over about 200 metres. From W to E the pits are about 1,128, 161 and 3,309 square metres in area and appear to underlie a block of post-medieval ridge and furrow cultivation. The extraction does not feature on historic OS map editions. On remote sensing data taken in 2019, the extractive pits are still evident (1-2).
