Description

A post-medieval extractive pit is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located in a field about 380 metres NE of Prospect Farm and centred at SP 70726 27839, an irregularly-shaped extractive pit is about 5,588 square metres in area, is bisected by a linear field boundary and partly cuts through blocks of medieval ridge and furrow cultivation earthworks. The extraction does not feature on historic OS map editions and therefore likely dates to the first half of the 19th century or earlier. On remote sensing data taken in 2019, the extractive pit to the east of the field boundary is very shallow and its edges softened by post-war plough-levelling, whilst to the west of the field boundary, the extraction site remains unchanged (1-2).
