Description
Ditches and banks from probable medieval village shrinkage is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located in fields north and west of Home Farm in Middle Claydon village and centred at SP 42020 25900, the earthworks extend across an area about 285 metres WSW-ENE and 166 metres NNW-SSE. A linear ditch between 6.5 and 11 metres wide extends about 285 metres WSW-ENE that may have been a boundary, hollow way or trackway. From the south side of this are a number of linear connected ditches that extend perpendicular SSE from 75 to 124 metres. At the WSW end the ditches border a small block of ridge and furrow cultivation earthworks, adjacent to which are a number of subcircular and rectilinear ditches, whose function is uncertain (1-3).
SP 720253. DMV Middle Claydon (B4).
APs show irregular depopulation markings contained by ridge and furrow in Claydon Park (and so probably resulting from the emparking) and around the existing hamlet of Middle Claydon (B2).
No settlement pattern of Md desertion survives in the grounds of Claydon House (SP 72 NW 6). Ground disturbance around the village of Middle Claydon at SP 721258 represents village shrinkage (B5).
NRHE insert 1998 (B6).
