Monument record MBC45167 - Possible post-medieval windmill mound, Claydon Park.

A possible post-medieval windmill mound is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located within the grounds of Claydon Park and centred at SP 71389 25462, the circular mound is about 15.5 metres in diameter and is located within a large area of medieval and/or post-medieval ridge and furrow cultivation earthworks. In the 18th century these fields were included within the parkland of the newly constructed Claydon House. It is also possible that the mound is constructed as a parkland feature, either as a tree mound or for use as a vantage point. However, the 1st Edition OS map dated 1880 shows that the mound, if it existed at that time, was sited within a small mid-19th century woodland that was not present on the 1813 Ordnance Surveyors’ Drawing (1-5).
