Description

A post-medieval extractive pit is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as levelled earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located in a field about 795 metres SW of Verney Farm and centred at SP 72976 25134, an irregularly-shaped extractive pit is about 13,677 square metres in area and partly cuts through a block of medieval ridge and furrow cultivation earthworks. The extraction does not feature on historic OS map editions and therefore likely dates to the first half of the 19th century or earlier. This evidence is also suggested on the 1949 dated aerial photograph where the extractive pit is already shallow and its edges softened by plough-levelling at that time (1-2).
