Monument record MBC45162 - Post-medieval extractive pit, Sandhill Farm

A post-medieval extractive pit is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located in a field about 295 metres E of Sandhill Farm and centred at SP 73439 26592, a large irregularly-shaped extractive pit is about 11,419 square metres in area and cuts through a block of medieval ridge and furrow cultivation earthworks. The extraction does not feature on historic OS map editions and therefore likely dates to the first half of the 19th century or earlier. On recent remote sensing data the extractive pit is still visible but is much more shallow and its edges softened by plough-levelling (1-2).
