- EXTRACTIVE PIT (Post-Medieval - 1540 AD to 1798 AD)
Description
A post-medieval extractive pit is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located in a field about 395 metres E of St Marys church in East Claydon and centred at SP 74392 25541, an irregularly-shaped extractive pit is about 973 square metres in area and cuts through a block of medieval ridge and furrow cultivation earthworks. The extraction does not feature on historic OS maps and therefore likely dates to the first half of the 19th century or earlier. On recent remote sensing data the extractive pit is still visible but is much more shallow and its edges softened by plough-levelling (1-2).
