Description

Extensive ditches, platforms and ponds representing medieval village shrinkage are visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and were mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located in fields north of Whitehouse Farm in East Claydon village and centred at SP 74088 25750, a series of interconnected linear ditches form a series of irregularly shaped and rectilinear enclosures. Also visible are at least two earthworks platforms: one 18 x 22 metres rectilinear centred at SP 74051 25684 and adjacent to it at SP 74022 25672, an irregularly shaped platform 28 x 21 metres at its widest points. Some the ditches may have functioned as trackways or hollow ways as they bound the edges of blocks of ridge and furrow cultivation earthworks. To the NE of the farm is a rectilinear terrace which has a 5 metres wide earthwork bank along its NE and SE facing sides, to the outside of which is 4 metres wide boundary ditch or hollow way. Within the enclosure centred at SP 74092 25700 is a circular pit 3.5 metres in diameter, surrounded by an earthwork bank about 1.7 metres wide. Speculatively, this may be the remains of a well or possibly a structure. Adjacent to it is a triangular hollow that may have been a pond, with a further subrectangular pond about 21 x 12 metres at its widest centred at SP 74021 25628 (1-4).
