Description

A medieval hollow way and system of boundary ditches is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located in fields adjacent New Farm in East Claydon village and centred at SP 73800 25817, an L-shaped hollow way up to 9 metres wide extends 280 metres SW from SP 73850 25931 before turned 90 degrees SE for a further 204 metres, terminating at SP 73879 25720. Extending SW from the NW-SE aligned hollow way are at least 5 parallel narrow linear ditches up to 2.5 metres wide and between 56 and 137 metres in length. To the NE of the hollow way is a ditch aligned roughly NW-SE that bounds the side of a block of ridge and furrow cultivation earthworks. From the SW facing side, three further parallel narrow linear ditches extend SW perpendicular to the ditch. At the SE end of the hollow way adjacent to the lane are two possible rectilinear platforms of uncertain function aligned roughly WNW-ESE: one 24 x 6 metres and the other 20 x 8.5 metres. These are no longer visible as they have been levelled by changes to the farm with the creation of a new entrance. On aerial photographs taken in 2019 and recent remote sensing data, some of the boundary ditches to the west have been levelled by residential development, though the hollow way remains extant (1-4).
