Description

Ridge and furrow field systems of medieval and post medieval date are visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as extant earthworks and levelled earthworks and were mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located within the parish of Akeley and centred at SP 70793 38006. Ridge and furrow earthworks are visible across most of the parish of Akeley but remain as the same only around the village where land use has not changed to arable. (1-14)

Medieval and/or post medieval ridge and furrow, remnants for the former common open-field system, is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located in the western half of Akeley parish and centred at SP 69706 38205, a cluster of ridge and furrow earthwork blocks is focused around Stockholt Farm. It is likely that a few of the blocks are formed in the late 19th century as they lay within ancient woodland known as Stockholt Wood on the 1814 Ordnance Surveyors Drawing, though the boundary has been realigned by 1881 and the wood renamed Akeley Wood, creating three new cultivatable fields. On aerial photographs taken in 2019 and recent remote sensing data, almost all the blocks have been plough levelled by post-war agricultural regimes (15-20)
