Description

OUTLINE OF 2 KILNS, DESTROYED DURING EXCAVATIONS OF M40, FOUND BY CCS. FEW FRAGMENTS OF POTTERY FOUND, SIMILAR TO WARES OF 2ND CENTURY EXCAVATED KILNS AT SU 9725 8827 (CASS 01523)(B1-2).

SU978881. Roman kilns were found by Mr C Stanley during construction of the M40. They were destroyed, but some material was recovered (B1).

The outline of two kilns, destroyed during excavations of the M40 motorway, were found by C Stanley in Nov 1972 at (A) SU9768 8811 & (B) SU9780 8807. Only a few fragments of pottery were found, and these were similar to the ware of the excavated kiln sites at SU9725 8827 (ie 2nd c). See SU98NE1.
The sites were plotted on the OS 25" from ground measurements held by C Stanley (a) (B3).
