Description

Woodland features of medieval/post medieval date are visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as extant earthworks and were mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located within Foscott Wood, Foscott, and centred at SP 71149 36993. Lidar visualisations show a woodland ride, drainage ditches, water channels and ponds, and an area of levelled earthworks of probable ridge and furrow field systems between the two sections of woodland. The ponds may relate to the creation of the reservoir or be part of the Site of Special Scientific Interest. Woodland is visible on 1946 aerial photographs, before the construction of the reservoir, and is shown on historic mapping; the ride through the woodland leads towards a house and outbuildings shown on Ordnance Survey Epoch 1 map, the Ordnance Surveyors Drawing of Stony Stratford (1814) shows this as Foxcote Wood Farm. Some of the features align with the conjectural route of a Roman road (Margary 162 – see MBC6013) but have been affected by the woodland land use. (1-5)
