Monument record MBC45089 - Area of shrunken settlement between Weatherhead Farm and Willow Wood Barn, Leckhampstead

An area of shrunken settlement of medieval date are visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as extant earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located between Weatherhead Farm and Willow Wood Barn (formerly Lower Farm), Leckhampstead and centred at SP 73643 37370. Linear earthworks appear to form plot boundaries and Google Earth in 2006 appears to show cropmarks of former buildings. The area of settlement appears to continue to the east of Willow Wood Barn (formerly Lower Farm). Fieldwalking in the arable fields surrounding this area, undertaken as part of the Whittlewood Project in recorded some of the highest density of medieval pottery sherds. These earthworks may have been affected by landslip deposits which are visible at the bottom of the same slope (see MBC45085). (1-8)
