Description

A road/trackway of probable post medieval date is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as extant levelled earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located between Leckhampstead Wharf and the site of Grove Barn, 220m north of the A422, Leckhampstead and centred at SP 73611 36186. This trackway is visible as a curving line of earthworks leading north from the site of Leckhampstead Wharf, it crosses the line of the A422, where an extractive pit has been cut in to it where it joins the road. It continues to the north of the A422 towards the site of Grove Barn, demolished by 1946 but recorded on Ordnance Survey Epoch 1 map. The 1814 Ordnance Surveyors’ Drawing of Stony Stratford shows the line of this curving road crossed by the line of the modern A422, the Tingewick to Old Stratford Turnpike set up in 1744, but is not on the Epoch 1 map. Along its length are extractive pits which may have been for its repair or for carrying the gravel or stone extracted from them. (1-7)
