Description
An irregular shaped extractive pit of medieval/post medieval date is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as levelled earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located approximately 270m north of Leckhampstead Wharf, Leckhampstead, and centred at SP 73644 36110. The pit is approximately 51x34m in size and is passed on the east side by a sinuous trackway that runs between Leckhampstead Wharf and the site of Grove Barn, shown on the Ordnance Survey Epoch 1 map, north of the A422. The underlying solid geology is limeston of the Great Oolite Group overlain by Superficial deposits of Glaciofluvial Sands and Gravels. (1-2)
