Description

A trackway or baulk between areas of ridge and furrow of medieval/post medieval date is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing date as extant levelled earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located approximately 330m north of Leckhampstead Wharf, Leckhampstead, and centred at SP 73523 36066. Trackway is visible as a sinuous levelled earthwork on arial photographs on the north side of a very straight later road between Leckhampstead Wharf and the A422 to the north. There are areas of extractive pits in the area and other trackways which lead between these features and the canal or nearby farms. At the northern end of this earthwork was a square plot with a cottage or barn and outbuilding and the outline of a probable garden, in the form of a line of trees, to the south; these are no longer present by 1946 but show on the Ordnance Survey Epoch 1 map and the 1814 Ordnance Surveyors’ Drawing of Stony Stratford. The L shaped area at the top of this feature may be the site of the buildings and the trackway led to these from the Grand Union Canal or the river to the south, before the canal was constructed, and the buildings or an extractive pit on the north side of the A422.
