Monument record MBC45060 - Ridge and furrow in the parish of Whaddon

Ridge and furrow field systems with plough headlands and ditches of medieval/post medieval date are visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as extant earthworks, levelled earthworks and cropmarks and were mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located within the parish of Whaddon and centred at SP 79619 35073. This record covers ridge and furrow earthworks in grid squares SP73SE, SP73NW and SP83NW and the majority remained as earthworks in the 1940s. At the time of the project earthworks remain around Barnhill Farm, where some have been affected by modern land use for a quad bike/4x4 driving track, and in small woodland parcels such as Oldland Covert, Bushey Close Spinney and an unnamed parcel to the north of Barn Hill Farm. The parish was inclosed in 1830 and the former field systems and roads that were much changed as part of this process. Modern land use is mostly arable. (1-22)
