- ROAD (Medieval to Post-Medieval - 1066 AD to 1798 AD)
Description
A road of probable medieval date is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as levelled earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located at south west of Home Farm, Thornton, and centred at SP 75015 35684. This road is visible as tapering earthworks on aerial photographs but modern arable land use has reduced these to levelled earthworks on lidar visualisations. There is an old chalk pit shown on Epoch 1 mapping at Home Farm and this may by associated with that or a route to the farm from pasture/woodland/open fields. It does not appear on any historic mapping other than a line of trees on the late 19th century Epoch 1 map, but the line of the earthworks appears to continue within the ridge and furrow earthworks across the area and a short earthwork to the. The field name information in the HER does not provide any information to help and this is not shown on the Stony Stratford Ordnance Surveyors Drawing. There used to be a green in the parish but this was inclosed in 1529 (VCH p243-249) and perhaps the road led to or from this. (1-6)
