Monument record MBC45044 - Former road, approximately 1km north of Whaddon Hall, Whaddon

A road of medieval/post medieval date is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks, levelled earthworks and cropmarks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located approximately 1km north of Whaddon Hall, Whaddon, and centred at SP 80348 35783. The 1814 Ordnance Surveyors’ Drawing of Stony Stratford shows the course of the road from Whaddon Hall heading north towards the parishes of Calverton and Whitehouse, now in Milton Keynes, where it crosses a watercourse on the boundary between the parishes. Part of the road remains as a field boundary and modern land use is arable. The parish of Whaddon was inclosed in 1830 and it is likely this road was stopped up and the present straight road created or when the parkland was created for Whaddon Hall; the Ordnance Survey Epoch 1 map shows parkland features over a larger area. The 1814 map shows no field boundaries over this area, just this road and another to the west; the 1844 map shows only the current straight road. (1-7)
