Description

Maculae and linear features of uncertain date are visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as levelled earthworks and cropmarks and were mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located approximately 650m north west of St Mary's Church, Lillingstone Lovell, and centred at SP 70864 41063. Linear features of a possible trackway and irregular shaped maculae are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs and uneven ground on lidar visualisations. The area immediately to the south was field walked as part of the Whittlewood Project (LL7 - see MBC34432) and the concentration of Roman pottery was mapped continuing along the line of the linear cropmark; the fieldwalking area did not include this area of cropmarks. The cropmarks also coincide with an oval deposit of sands and gravels, shown on the British Geological Survey 1:50,000 mapping, overlying solid geology of Bliswoth Clay Mudstone. The field boundary crossing the south edge of this area of gravel, between this and the field to the south which was fieldwalked, was removed after 1995 and before 2004. Other, probably geological, features are visible as cropmarks on some aerial photographs on Google Earth. Modern land use is arable and ridge and furrow earthworks covered part of the area in the 1940s. (1-6)
