Description

A road of probable post medieval date is visible on historic aerial photographs and/or remote sensing data as extant levelled earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located at between the Grand junction Canal and the former Turnpike road from Buckingham, not the A422) and centred at SP 73435 35951. This curving road appears to overlie ridge and furrow earthworks and runs between the canal, but not from the site of Leckhampstead Wharf so it may pre-date that, and the former turnpike road, the modern A422. It follows a line of Superficial Deposits of Head overlying Great Oolite Limestone and there is an extractive pit or area of damage part of the way along the trackway between the road and the canal. It is probably visible on the 1814 map as a curving field boundary and as a line of trees on the Ordnance Survey Epoch 1 map, but not as a boundary. It may have been associated with the construction of the canal and is joined by another trackway toward the southern end, which also runs from the A422 crossing former extractive pits. (1-6)
