Description

A 20th century sand pit is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as plough-levelled earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located on a field boundary on the W side of the Preston Bissett to Calvert road about 415 metres NE of Cowley Farm and centred at SP 66635 28403, the linear sand pit is about 67 metres N-S and 10 metres W-E, being an area of about 687 square metres. The sand pit appears on the 1923 dated 3rd Edition and 4th Edition OS maps, but not on earlier editions, suggesting a 20th century date. It is still visible on aerial photographs taken in the 1940s through to 1961 but has been plough-levelled by 1973 (1-5).
