- EXTRACTIVE PIT (Post-Medieval - 1540 AD? to 1798 AD)
Description
A post-medieval extractive pit is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as plough-levelled earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located on a field boundary on the S side of the Preston Bissett to Calvert road about 410 metres NE of Cowley Farm and centred at SP 66717 28276, the irregularly shaped pit is about 84 metres NW-SE and 113 metres SW-NE at its widest points, being an area of about 7,035 square metres. The pit does not feature on any iteration of the OS map series, so likely dates to the 18th or early 19th centuries. However, a small sand pit is shown on the adjacent side of the road on the 2nd Edition OS map, so it is possible that it was the same (1-2).
