Description

A Second World War prefabricated housing estate is visible on historic aerial photographs and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located on Ashgrove Road in Steeple Claydon village and centred at SP 69737 26898, the first 10 rectangular ‘prefabs’, each about 10 x 7 metres, have been constructed by 1946 along Ashgrove Road (now Victory Road), with 6 on the E side and 4 on the W side. Some houses have small sheds to the rear. In 1947, the foundations of 29 further prefabs of identical size are being constructed on a newly built loop road in a field to the W of Ashgrove Road, which by 1949 are completed. This small estate of emergency housing remains extant in 1961, but has been entirely demolished by 1973, though the road remains. The loop road too has been demolished by 2003. New residential housing now stands on the former prefab housing estate (1-8).
