Description
A rectilinear ditched enclosure of probable 20th century date is visible on historic aerial photographs as earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located about 280 metres east of the eastern end of Turweston airfield’s runway and centred at SP 62823 38483, a ditch about 1.5 metres wide encloses an internal area about 90 metres W-E by 50 metres N-S. The enclosure overlies two blocks of medieval and/or post-medieval ridge and furrow cultivation earthworks and is centrally aligned with the main runway for the former Second World War RAF military airfield at Turweston (HER No. MBC23729). Aerial photographs taken in 1944 and 1946 show that the enclosure was sited about 110 metres east of the two inner marker radar beacons, to which it is also centrally aligned, and therefore may be associated with the airfield’s operation or construction. The feature is no longer visible on aerial photographs taken in 1947, nor on the available aerial photographs dated thereafter (1-4).
