Description

Probable post medieval garden and drainage banks and ditches are visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and were mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located in a SE facing sloping field about 190 metres to the SE of St Augustine’s church in Westbury village and centred at SP 62403 35503, three parallel linear earthwork banks between 3 and 6 metres wide and (NW to SE) 47, 100 and 109 metres long are aligned SW-NE across the hillslope. Flanking these on the NW side are linear ditches. To the SE are a series of linear interconnected ditches that appear to link to a large drain and watercourse at the side and base of the slope. These features lie adjacent to the large landscaped gardens, complete with ponds, of the post-medieval house called The Manor, as depicted on the 1884 dated OS 1st edition map. Since the early 1940s, this residence became and remains Beachborough School, a private preparatory school. On aerial photographs taken in 2019 and recent remote sensing data, the earthworks remain extant (1-5).
