Description

Medieval shrunken village remains are visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and were mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located on a field boundary adjacent Main Street in Shalstone village and centred at SP 64129 36177, the settlement remains comprise three and possibly more earthwork platforms perpendicular to the lane and extending over 150 metres NNE-SSW, the largest and most southerly of which is about 32 metres square and bounded on two sides by a ditch, sited within a pasture field with adjacent medieval and/or post medieval ridge and furrow cultivation. None of the settlement earthworks are visible on historic aerial photographs taken in the 1940s, being mostly concealed by two parallel rows of trees, but become partially visible in 1961. However, by 1973 the field has come under arable cultivation (1-5).
