Description

Probable Iron Age and/or Roman ditched enclosures and boundaries are visible on aerial photographs as cropmarks and were mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located on the crest of a ridge in fields east of Shalstone village and centred at SP 64911 36886, the cropmarks comprise a complex of linear and curvilinear boundary ditches, some of which interest and overlap and at least two of which appear to form trapezoidal shaped enclosures: the first is centred at SP 64910 36853, with a ditch between 1 and 1.5 metres wide encloses an internal area about 30.5 x 22 metres at its widest: the second is centred at SP 64877 36885, with a ditch up to 1.7 metres wide enclosing an internal area about 38.5 x 25 metres, though there is no north side and only a partial east side. Contiguous to this are curving arcs of ditches that may represent further enclosures, though this is speculative and it is possible that some of these cropmarks are geological in origin. It should be noted that the 2006 dated aerial photograph from which this feature was mapped lacks high resolution. The cropmarks are quite poorly defined and appear best when subject to image enhancement/processing. However, the cropmarks do not appear on any of the other aerial photographs available to the project (1).
