- EXTRACTIVE PIT (Post-Medieval - 1540 AD? to 1798 AD)
Description
Three post-medieval extractive pits are visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located WNW-NW up to 400 metres from Abbey House and centred at SP 63599 39879, the extractive pits are not shown on the 1814 dated Ordnance Surveyor Drawing or the 1884 dated 1st Edition OS map. One of the pits is set within a small triangle of woodland, which is depicted as extant on the both maps, suggesting these pits were likely created in the 18th century or earlier. The irregularly shaped pits are 1,140 sq m, 1,968 sq m and 4,474 sq m in area. The two extraction areas not under woodland are in a cultivated field and are now visible as shallow earthworks due to repeated plough levelling (1-5).
