Description
A Second World War Royal Air Force camp, Site No.4 at RAF Turweston, is visible on historic aerial photographs and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located in Biddlesden Park and centred at SP 63294 39285, Site No.4 was one of 8 satellite camps for military personnel serving at adjacent RAF Turweston, an operational wartime military airfield. Site No.4 comprised airmens’ barrack huts, sergeants’ and officers’ quarters, ablution blocks, latrines, fuel compound, sentry post, mechanical and electrical (M&E) plinth which acted as an electrical transformer/junction box, earth-covered air raid shelters, accessed by a network of pathways and roads. Aerial photographs taken in 1973 show that all the buildings have been demolished except for the airmens’ and sergeants’ ablutions and part of the camp’s main access road. Aerial photographs taken in 2019 show that the remaining building has been demolished, but the main access road remains. Not all of the buildings or infrastructure that are shown on the 1945 dated Site Plan for this camp have been mapped as they are located under woodland cover and not visible on the available aerial photographs (1-4).
