Description

A Second World War Royal Air Force camp, Site No. 3 (Communal) at RAF Turweston, is visible on historic aerial photographs and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located about 100 metres SE of Dropshort Farm and centred at SP 63011 39128, Site No. 3 (Communal) was one of 8 satellite camps for military personnel serving at adjacent RAF Turweston, an operational wartime military airfield. Site No. 3 (Communal) comprised an Airmens’ Institute, fuel compound, mess facilities, offices and stores, sergeants mess, officers mess, latrines, ablution blocks, mechanical and electrical (M&E) plinth which acted as an electrical transformer/junction box, brick and earth-bermed blast shelters, earth covered air raid shelters, a fuel compound and transformer station, sentry post, water tank and the stand by set house. Aerial photographs taken in 1973 show that all the buildings have been demolished except for the stand by set house, though the paths. The road network, pathways and buildings’ concrete platform foundations remain extant. Aerial photographs taken in 2019 show that all the building platforms, paths and roads have now been demolished, with the exception of the main access road, which remains as a track. Not all of the buildings or infrastructure that are shown on the 1945 dated Site Plan for this camp have been mapped as they are located under woodland cover and not visible on the available aerial photographs (1-9).
