Description
Remnants of a curvilinear medieval wood bank and boundary ditch is visible on remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located within the SE quarter of Whitfield Wood and centred at SP 464298 238971, a linear ditch up to 2.5 metres wide extends about 150 metres WNW-ESE before curving to the SW for a further 275 metres. On the linear section of the ditch, fragments of an earthwork bank between 2.5 and 3 metres wide are visible on the south side of the ditch. It is possible that this is the remnants of a former wood bank, though there is no evidence of the earthworks or boundary on the 1814 Ordnance Surveyors’ Drawing or the OS 1st Edition map dated 1884 (1-3).
