Description
A rapid examination of NMR air photography suggests the presence of a linear feature (visible as a soilmark), possibly a Post Medieval ride associated with Stowe Park and its grounds. Visible from SP 67784003 to SP 68104047 (and possibly beyond) (8).
A post-medieval ornamental ride is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and cropmarks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located in fields between Blackpit Farm and Home Wood and centred at SP 67939 40228, a linear bank about 15 metres wide extend over 710 metres aligned SW-NE. Flanking both sides of the ride bank are sections of ditch. The fields in which these features are located were still shown as woodland called Great Wood on the 1814 Ordnance Surveyor's drawing, being part of Stowe Park’s landscape grounds. Through these woods was a system of interconnected linear ornamental rides, one of which these features are the remains. The 1st edition OS map shows that some of the parkland woods had been felled by 1881, creating agricultural fields, within which the cropmarks are visible (1-7).
