Description

A square ditched enclosure of probable Iron Age or Roman date is visible on historic aerial photographs as cropmarks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located in a field adjacent Dadford Road about 760 metres ENE of Thatcham Ponds Farm and centred at SP 66526 40284, a square ditch about 4 metres wide encloses an internal area about 20 metres SSW-NNE and 20 metres WNW-ESE. Part of the west side of the enclosure ditch is not visible on the available aerial photography, but this is possibly a result of modern agricultural ploughing. The cropmark of a probable Bronze Age barrow ring ditch lies centred some 53 metres to the NE of this enclosure. The feature is not visible on aerial photographs taken in 2020, which suggest that the field in which the enclosure lies is now being used as a car park for adjacent Silverstone racing circuit (1-2).
