Description

Structural remains comprising robbed out wall foundations. Building debris, including fragments of Penn tiles, suggest the building was constructed around the 14th-16th centuries and is possibly part of the complex of Burnham Abbey. A number of over-fired tiles suggests a tile kiln may have been nearby (B39).
A watching brief by KDK Archaeology in February 2023 during topsoil stripping and ground reduction for construction of a new tennis court revealed the footings of two late medieval or early post-medieval brick walls. A N-S wall 7.84m long, 0.4m wide, built of handmade bricks laid in English bond and with three surviving courses was recorded, along with an E-W return wall of brick 1.59m long, 0.45m wide with a clunch stone threshold for a door or opening in the wall. Two small moulded fragments of clunch may be pieces of a door architrave and a large fragment of Reigate Stone may have come from a stone column. The walls are interpreted as a boundary wall on the west side of the monastic complex, with a subdivision possibly separating the main precinct from the farm buildings. See report for detail (B40).
