Description

A medieval and/or post-medieval sinuous wood bank and boundary ditch is visible on remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located in fields west of Akeley Wood School and centred at SP 468891 237593, a sinuous earthwork bank up to 5 metres wide extends N-SSE for about 450 metres from SP 68859 37794 to SP 68971 37418, partly bounded on both sides by ditches up to 2.5 metres wide. After a gap of about 120 metres a sinuous ditch up to 6 metres wide extends a further 260 metres W-E from SP 69047 37337 to SP 69300 37343. These features match the sinuous edge of a large woodland called Stockholt Wood depicted on the 1814 Ordnance Surveyor’s Drawing. By the 1881 OS 1st Edition map, the Stockholt Wood has been somewhat cleared in the intervening years, its boundary redefined and renamed Akeley Wood (1-3).
