Description

A linear section of post-medieval avenue is visible on remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located between Corinthian Arch and the lodge at Bell Gate and centred at SP 67963 36486, a linear earthwork bank up to 3.5 metres wide follows the course of the existing Stowe Avenue, extending from Corinthian Arch NNW about 361 metres to SP 67880 36643. This avenue does not appear on the 1814 Ordnance Surveyor’s Drawing, or the 1881 OS 1st Edition map, suggesting it was an early design feature that was later amended to the curving roadway that joins the Arch to Bell Gate via New Inn Farm (1-3).
