- EXTRACTIVE PIT (Post-Medieval - 1540 AD to 1798 AD)
Description
A post-medieval extractive pit is visible on remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located within Stonepit Hill Spinney and centred at SP 66692 35637, the irregularly shaped extractive pit is about 7,700 square metres and cuts through a block of medieval and/or post-medieval ridge and furrow cultivation earthworks. The eponymous spinney suggest its function. The extractive pit appears as extant on the 1814 Ordnance Surveyor’s Drawing, suggesting it probably dates to the 18th century, though the spinney present today has grown over the site by the 1881 OS 1st Edition map (1-3).
