Description
A section of post-medieval linear avenue or ride is visible on historic aerial photographs as cropmarks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located in a field immediately south of Stowe Woods and centred at SP 67249 39255, two parallel linear ditches, each at least 5 metres wide, are set 28 metres apart and extend for about 400 metres NE-SW. These features match the rides shown on the 1814 Ordnance Surveyor’s Drawing as part of Stowe landscape park cutting through a large woodland at that time, though both ride and that part of the woodland had been cleared by the 1881 1st Edition OS map. On aerial photographs taken in 2019 and recent remote sensing data, the features are not visible (1-5).
