- EXTRACTIVE PIT (Post-Medieval - 1540 AD? to 1798 AD?)
Description
A probable post-medieval extractive pit is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located in fields adjacent The Hamlet, Hillesden and centred at SP 67787 30237, an irregularly shaped extractive pit measures about 150 metres SW-NE and up to 83 metres NW-SE and covers an area of about 4,432 square metres. The site is not identified on the 1813 Ordnance Surveyors Drawing or the 1881 dated 1st Edition OS map or subsequent iterations of the series and therefore is likely to date to the very start of the 19th century or earlier (1-5).
