Description

A possible Second World War air raid shelter is visible on historic aerial photographs and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located adjacent London Bridge in Buckingham and centred at SP 69759 33818, the possible rectilinear concrete opening slit of an air raid shelter is in the heavily shrubbed back garden of what appears to be workshops of some kind (now attached to W Ganderton & Sons garage). Whether an underground or earth-bermed air raid shelter is unclear due to the vegetation coverage on the available aerial photographs, which obscures the feature in 1946 and 1947, but which is visible in cleared ground in 1951. Aerial photographs taken in 1973 suggest that the shelter has been demolished by that time (1-4).
