Description

A Second World War Royal Air Force camp is visible on historic aerial photographs and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located within Tingewick Woods and centred at SP 65468 31679, this is the Instructional Site for nearby RAF Finmere, comprising a turret instructional and bombing teacher building, link trainer building, latrine block, ground instructional buildings, blanket store and post office, a fitters shop, a Mechanical & Electrical (M&E) plinth, as well as a single brick-built and earth-bermed open-topped blast shelter, all accessed by roads and footpath. Between 1947 and 1961, the fitters shop and the post office have been demolished. By 1973, the link trainer and sentry post have been demolished, with the remaining buildings having lost their roofs and in a ruinous state. Heavy woodland cover obscures the site thereafter, but aerial photographs taken in 2020, show that the two instructional buildings and latrine have been demolished by that time, leaving the shell of the turret instructional building and M&E plinth extant (1-7).
